New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS): Funded by the New Zealand government, these scholarships are for Bangladeshi students who wish to pursue a PhD in New Zealand. The funding inclusions under this scholarship are university tuition fee, associated student levies, a living stipend and health insurance coverage. Tuitions fees are provided up to NZ $25,000 over 3 years and for living expenses, NZ $600 on an annual basis.

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships: New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are prestigious scholarships that recognize New Zealand’s history and ties to the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) – an international program under which Commonwealth countries offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth states. Bangladesh is eligible for this scholarship as well. The scholarship can fully fund tuition fees, provide a weekly allowance of NZ $491, provide a one-time setup cost of NZ $3000 and also assist in insurance and medical costs.

New Zealand Global Research Alliance Doctoral Scholarship (NZ-GRADS): The NZ-GRADS scholarship program is a new program that has been created to support the students and researchers from developing countries who want to pursue the study of science in New Zealand. This scholarship is quite diverse and offers many benefits. An annual tuition fee funding of NZ $10000, a living stipend of $28,000, Medical Insurance of $700 and even visa application costs up to $1000 and some associated funding as well.

SEG Scholarships: The SEG Scholarship is funded by the Soshi Educational Group, which spans Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand. With more than fifteen educational institutes throughout the Asia-Pacific region (including schools, tertiary institutes and other educational organizations) the SEG provides facilities for all learners of all ages – from small children to senior citizens. To study in New Zealand, like most countries a student visa or permit is mandatory. Fortunately, Due to Bangladesh being a commonwealth nation, the student visa procedure is diversified and accommodating for Bangladeshi Students.

As an international student, the government of New Zealand provides 4 different types of student visa permits. Each of these has specific criteria and eligibility requirements.

Fee-Paying Student Visa: The students will pay for their tuition fees and be able to study for 4 years alongside a part-time work permit. This is the most common form of visa which is applicable for regular students. The details of this visa are described below.

Exchange Student Visa: There are specific student exchange programs in Bangladesh that allow international students to study in NZ. However, this visa is for a particular group.

Post-Study Work VISA (Employer Assisted): This visa, on the other hand, is not flexible with the type of job you opt for, after study. Providing a window of two years, this visa gives you a chance to find a specific job role with a specific employer. Please keep in mind to apply for this visa within three months of the expiry of your student visa.

After remaining in the country for a certain period, permanent residency opportunities can be explored.

New Zealand has eight state-funded universities, 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) which have been unified into the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST), and about 550 Private Training Establishments (PTEs), which include English language schools. Universities offer higher degree-level education. Programs are research-led and generally academic rather than vocational. In the 2020 QS World University Rankings, seven of New Zealand’s universities were in the top 100 in at least one subject. ITPs and a few larger PTEs offer vocational degree-level education. Whereas, PTEs tend to offer specific vocational programs, mainly at certificate and diploma level.

To be enrolled, each of the universities requires a specific set of documents regarding the previous academic achievements of the student. There are also some additional documents required. The key issue here is different universities sometimes ask for a different set of documents. The standard for International English Language Tests is commonly held across different universities to be a minimum of 6.0 Bands for IELTS, with a minimum band score of 5.5 in all of the sections. In terms of Post Graduate studies, the score is 6.5 with a minimum band of 6.0 across all sections.
