Sault College

Sault College was established in 1965 as the ‘Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Vocational Centre’ or OVC, which was essentially a training school. Similar training schools were opened in the London and Ottawa regions. Soon, these training schools evolved into Ontario’s community colleges. In 1967, the Ontario government established a system of Colleges of Applied Arts & Technology, more often known as ‘community colleges’. Thus, Sault Ste. Marie’s OVC became the Sault Campus of the newly established Cambrian College of Applied Arts & Technology. Community colleges’ enrollments grew rapidly as the public immediately accepted and supported these institutions. Within five years, the satellite campuses became independent colleges, and the Sault Campus became an independent institution known as Sault College of Applied Arts & Technology. With time, the college added more educational programs to cover all major disciplines. Presently, each year, Sault College caters to the postsecondary educational needs of over 4,500 part-time and full-time students. The college also shares its resources with the Lake Superior State University.
