In terms of living expenses, the costs will vary based on how a student intends to live, where the university is located and which university has been selected. To make the calculations less complicated, most university websites offer an estimated range of expenses for international students. Many of the universities offer on-campus lodging which is affordable, but there are outside options available as well. Like everywhere else in the world, living in big cities and urban areas are comparatively expensive than living in a suburban area. Although for students, the best convenient option would be to live close to campus or in campus dorms, it’s often the costly option.

Permanent Residency Opportunities

The government of New Zealand provides promising opportunities to the life and future of those who may choose to study and work in their nation. New Zealand provides these services in the form of immigration policies and works permits in many forms. However, not all of these policies entail the benefits of remaining in New Zealand for the foreseeable future as a citizen or an immigrant for that matter. For candidates, who have completed two years in the country and wish to obtain a Permanent Residence Visa, it is quite difficult to define the period for visa validation. Please note that there is a difference between the terms Resident Visa and Permanent Resident Visa.

A permanent Residency Visa will allow a student to become a citizen of the country, enabling him or her to enjoy the benefits of being a citizen of the nation. It is a highly sought-after stance but requires patience and efforts. The PR will allow you to live, work, travel and study in New Zealand indefinitely without any restrictions. You can avail of medical facilities at subsidized rates as well as social security benefits. Your children shall be eligible for free education at state-run schools and universities. You can sponsor your relatives to apply for permanent resident visas, provided they meet the residency and assurance of support requirements. You can apply for New Zealand citizenship after staying in the country for several years, needless to say, that you fulfil all their other criteria such as basic usage of the English language, communicative skills, good character, and a clear intent to continue staying in the country. It should also be noted that children born in New Zealand shall automatically gain citizenship of the country by birth.

There is a systematic procedure for students to acquire this status. But this must be completed through a thorough step by step process, which begins with the selection of the correct visa according to your situation.

Post-Study Work VISA (Open): This visa has flexible options for students who have completed their course but are still looking for a job. This visa guarantees your stay in the country for a year to allow you to find a job related to your field of study or research. In the meanwhile, you are allowed to work in any field, to support your livelihood in New Zealand.

Post-Study Work VISA (Employer Assisted): This visa, on the other hand, is not flexible with the type of job you opt for, after study. Providing a window of two years, this visa gives you a chance to find a specific job role with a specific employer. Please keep in mind to apply for this visa within three months of the expiry of your student visa.

After remaining in the country for a certain period, permanent residency opportunities can be explored.

Top Universities

New Zealand has eight state-funded universities, 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) which have been unified into the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST), and about 550 Private Training Establishments (PTEs), which include English language schools. Universities offer higher degree-level education. Programs are research-led and generally academic rather than vocational. In the 2020 QS World University Rankings, seven of New Zealand’s universities were in the top 100 in at least one subject. ITPs and a few larger PTEs offer vocational degree-level education. Whereas, PTEs tend to offer specific vocational programs, mainly at certificate and diploma level.

Institutional Requirements

To be enrolled, each of the universities requires a specific set of documents regarding the previous academic achievements of the student. There are also some additional documents required. The key issue here is different universities sometimes ask for a different set of documents. The standard for International English Language Tests is commonly held across different universities to be a minimum of 6.0 Bands for IELTS, with a minimum band score of 5.5 in all of the sections. In terms of Post Graduate studies, the score is 6.5 with a minimum band of 6.0 across all sections. However, considering the general perspective the required documents for most of the schools are as following:

Curriculum Vitae Documentation of English language Test (IELTS/PTE/TOEFL)
